14 Public Square

14 Public Square has been home to many different occupants but the building itself has been there since 1907.

Built as the Stewart Opera House this historic building has many stories to tell.

Over the years it has served the public as a music venue, print shop, hardware store, department store, government offices, and others but its most popular tenant is its current one; Impellizzeri’s pizza restaurant.

Only incurring slight renovations over the years with an addition of a modern stairwell and elevator this very visible building in the heart of downtown will serve its visitors for many years to come.

New to the square of downtown is a beautiful new structure known as the Newberry.

Occupying the address of 90 Public Square this stylistic new building pays tribute to the past with its 2 story brick and granite appearance, wrought iron trim, and period-correct awnings.

The street-level boasts a new gourmet burger restaurant (JR Neighbors) while the lower level hides a classic speakeasy saloon (Cavern Club).

The top floor houses 4 luxury lofts complete with individual private rooftop terraces. The views overlook historic downtown and the tall hillside flanked by a railway.

Well thought out and sturdy construction will make this popular destination a must-see for anyone visiting downtown Elizabethtown.

90 Public Square - The Newberry

The Newberry, 90 Public Square, pays tribute to historic architecture with its two-story brick and granite facade, wrought iron trim, and period-inspired awnings.

This corner of Elizabethtown’s square is teeming with historic significance and local memories.  In the late 1800s, this spot hosted hotels and boarding houses, printing shops, a barbershop, and a drug store.  At the turn of the century, you could visit offices, make a telephone call, get your picture taken, and purchase hats.  As the world was living through The Great War, Elizabethtown residents came to this corner drug store for medicine and a treat at the ice cream and soda fountain.

In the mid-1950s Newberry’s opened and became a hub of local shopping and dining.  Long-time Elizabethtown residents remember coming to Newberry’s for school clothes, candy and nuts, sewing notions, and a dining counter where you could get everything from an ice cream float to a meat & three meal.  Newlyweds stopped here to buy items to set up “housekeeping” and young folks courted over a cherry Coca-Cola.  One of the favorite memories is a large staircase that led downstairs to a wonderland of pets:  turtles, fish, and even baby alligators!

After sitting empty for many years and being plagued by some structural problems, this beloved property was purchased by Elizabethtown Renaissance Association in 2016 with fresh vision.  Work began to design a space that could once again contribute to downtown life, business, and tourism.

The street-level boasts a new gourmet burger restaurant, JR Neighbors,  while the lower level hides a classic speakeasy saloon, the Cavern Club.

The top floor features four luxury lofts, complete with individual private rooftop terraces. The views overlook historic downtown and the tall hillside flanked by a railway.

Attention to historic detail in both construction and business plans will make this corner a destination for both locals and visitors to downtown Elizabethtown.
